Is your life

arm

n' arm

with Freedom?

Have you

beat

to death

   ye olde Demon ~

Who enslaves

so much

of

   mankind ~

With a depthless appetite

for poisons

that wreck the temple

of body n' mind?

Well

well

my

   friend ~

Why

don't

you

 bend?

Be a Cottonwood Tree

so free

below 'dee

   Deep Desert sky ~

And

let

Idiot World

   pass you by...

Cloud Shadow 32

The backwash

of

my

   past ~

How long

is

it

to last?

How long am I

gonna

hear

   these ghosts ~

Who have nothin' good

to say

when they

make their toasts?

Cloud Shadow 33

Can you handle Love

with

a

capital L?

Can you handle human-

kind

when it's venomous

as Hell?

Well

well

my

   friend ~

Why

don't

you

 bend?

Be a Cottonwood

tree

in 'dee

   Deep Desert wind ~

Yeeeeeeeap, and let

thee other, thee

Idiot

   Wind ~

Blow

 it-

self

   out ~

Now what do ye s'pose

Love for all

of Life is all

about?

Cloud Shadow 34

Love Peace n' Freedom

I gotta say

makes a pretty

   nice phrase ~

It

never

ceases

   to amaze ~

Me with

it's

breezy butterfly

   fluttering sound ~

When I hear it

I know

I'm afloat

   above holy ground ~

"Love Peace and Freedom"

how can it be

wrong

for this bleary old soul?

Unless, of course, it

smacks

of terrible

"Sex Drugs and Rock n' Roll"...

Cloud Shadow 35

Let me tell you a

little story

that you no doubt

   have heard before ~

About "Love Peace and

Freedom"

vs.

   the Vietnam War ~

Thousands upon thousands

draft-dodged

that

    Son of a Bitch ~

As

war

mongers

   got rich ~

And

I'm

sorry

   to say ~

As a lot of poor

folks and soldiers

got

   blown away ~

At any rate, Mike, my

older

brother

   went ~

But by the time

my turn come

I

   sent ~

 A letter askin'

'em

how the Dodgers

    were doin' ~

As the war

kept

a

     brewin' ~

By then it was

a

popular

   sport ~

 Go-

 in'

to

   jail n' court ~

 Dod-

 gin'

the

   war ~

(Never-the-less

years later

I enlisted

   to even the score ~

But a

"sunshine soldier"

this

   made me ~

As old Tom Paine

once done wrote

so

   independently) ~

When the War

ended

the

   Movement was keen ~

The most pop-

ular thing

we

   ever done seen ~

"Love Peace and Freedom!"

 fine-

 oh-

   ly won out ~

But it transformationed

into a

"Sex Drugs and Rock n' Roll"

   shout ~

And

now

we

   have AIDS ~

Along with some other

 some-

what

   demonic shades ~

About which we

in the West

don't know

   what to dooooooo ~

And me?

Well now

I'm

Deep Desert Bluuuuuuue...
